El Zanjón
El Zanjon

The most important urban archaeology site in the city.
A sophisticated architectural frame of the past, the present and the future, where poetry, history and myth can be fully enjoyed.
Tunnels and mystery. Sustainable archaeological tourism - Special events

In this site, destiny and research enabled an unexpected discovery of the most ancient original maze under the city.

Excavations in the 1830 old mansion led to the uncovering of the ancient Zanjón (ravine) which extended over the whole length of the square.

Belonging to a wealthy family with six slaves in 1860 it was turned into a tenement by 1890.

After more than 20 years of restoration, it is now part of "El Zanjón - Idea Site" that includes three buildings and is internationally recognized as an archaeological calendar of the city.

The combination of destiny and research led to the discovery of the northern branch of El Zanjón, 11 years after their first encounter.

The most important evidence of a remote cultural presence are structures related to the control of nature. In this particular case, the tunneling served to control the flow of a Tercero del Sur (El Zanjón), an intermittent watercourse that drained into the River Plate in the southern part of the city.

We unearthed the archaeological past and also its memory and framed it with such detail that it constitutes by itself a work of art.

The recently restored narrowest house of the city, could only be admired from the outside for decades, today it will whisper stories that can be listened to within the romantic walls of its centuries-old patio.

Casa Minima, the narrowest house in BA, which was a part of a larger house, has retained its original materials from the early XIX century. The small house, with its display of clay walls and two hundred-year-old plaster, beckons us to visit this corner. Here the ghosts of early traditions of Buenos Aires intermingle with the myth of the emancipated slave.
